![]() The bottom line is that the iMac Pro is a good option for audio, but its not perfect. I worked with them for a while and got it to be 98% resolved, but I gave up because of time constraints. Mostly has been a blamestorm of you have faulty kernel extensions. Apple is acknowledging there is an issue, but also not acknowledging it. I ended up with kernel panics at least 2-3 daily. So far, Ive not had any issues with the macbook pro. Initially that was just the imac pro, but my macbook pro also has this chip. There is a long running thread on the apple support communities concerning kernel panics with T2 chip equipped macs. It is plenty powerful, and does everything I want for audio. I do notice a significant difference in how everything runs now with the i9, and it was a definite speed improvement.Īs for the iMac Pro, its a mixed bag. I was using a 2014 macbook pro prior to this, and it was plenty powerful, but I have kids that need computers, so I wanted to upgrade and give them my old laptop. There are now pc based laptops that approach or exceed apple quality now, but I wanted a laptop I could also make music with, and Im bought into OSX for audio. While this is less of an issue/truth now, I always liked apple laptops as they were just generally better built with better materials. I run Windows 10 as a VMware fusion environment so 16gb for that is the minimum I need to run comfortably. I have an instance of SQL Server running and full development environment of an ntier enterprise app. I have long wanted a 32gb laptop as I do development work as my day job, mostly on the microsoft stack. ![]() ![]() I bought the macbook pro i9 pretty much as soon as it was available locally at my apple store. Heard its more powerful but never gets when people says it like suit for this and that ![]() The thing is, i maxed out cuz of my friend's expiring student discount and if i return and re-order i won't get any discount no more.Ĭan you explain more on i9 for work stuff from your knowledge more? I would want it but too pricy for me haha This was for a 2018 MacBook Pro i9 2.9 GHz with 32 GB of RAM. Downside, is I need to go get a wired mouse now. Anyway, worth a try if you experience the same. I'm sure if I get a really big session it will probably kick on, but some how the Bluetooth was causing these CPU spikes and wreaking havoc on my setup. It used to ramp up pretty fast even with just one instrument. And the best thing I have noticed is the fan doesn't kick on anymore in my Logic session. Especially when running Kontakt or Keyscape, which made it unusable. The even better news is this also fixed the CPU overload spikes I was getting in Logic. Basically it was making a 1 second digital distortion glitch sound every 5-10 minutes. Doing so has kept my RME USB BabyFace Pro from glitching. The Bluetooth change appears to be THE fix. I also have notifications turned off for all apps, no system sounds, Siri turned off, and only using wifi for internet - no ethernet adapters. I have my MBP on a tilted stand to help airflow, but when the fans kick in they reach about 6000 RPMs, which is really noisy and sucks for tracking mic inputs.I resolved all of my issues by disabling Bluetooth and removing all Bluetooth devices in System Preferences. Intel specs the chip max temp at 100 Celsius, and I can get really close to that running simple sessions with CPU intensive soft synths and fx chains, easily hitting high 90's. The new i9 is probably too much CPU for the MBP chassis. One thing to consider with using the new MBP for audio production, they run crazy HOT. I just installed your app, and am at home, unable to test it fully.I couldn't replicate this on my MBP, but that doesn't mean it isn't related in some way. As far as I can tell, the app does permit power-source-based switching without the login display resolution problem! I have to test the effects on an external projector display next week when I'm in a classroom, however it may limit the resolution available to me when running on battery power and connecting a projector. This application allows me to choose the card to use when I want to save battery power and have no external display connected.īut it resets automatic switching if it was turned off before the app was run. This seems to be an Apple bug triggered by some update in the past couple of months, at least on my MBP. You can't get back the highest resolution and have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (the higher resolution setting is not available on the integrated card, and for some reason the system won't permit the change). On some Macs with dual cards, such as my 2011 MBP, use of the Energy Saver automatic graphics switching will trigger a display problem when logging out and logging back in: the display will be stuck on a lower-resolution option until restart.
